Synopsis: Artie and the Wolf Moon is about a young girl who finds out she comes from a long line of werewolves. When her “abilities” finally appear, she learns about her family’s history and the power of community. She also learns the truth about her father.

Artie’s mother struggles to face the past, which impacts her ability to guide Artie on her wolf journey. Artie’s mother realizing her limitations, enlist the help of family. As the family comes together, they mend old wounds just in time because little does Artie know; werewolves aren’t the scariest things in the woods. The past has come back to finish the job and Artie must learn to control her abilities before it’s too late.

I enjoyed this story a lot. It has elements of all my favorite things:

  • -Fantasy (werewolves and other magical creatures)
  • -Family
  • -Lore
  • -Coming of Age
  • -Realizing the power within one’s self

The illustrations were also amazing. It is literally a beautiful book.

I think this would be a good read for middle-schoolers. The book is not small but the story is pretty straightforward and easy to follow. There’s no explicit vocabulary, mature content, or graphic depictions.
